What is Self Sabotage?

Self sabotage is where you have a really strong goal that you deeply and wholeheartedly want to achieve but you fail to commit. You lose focus and drift back to your normal. These goals can be anything from losing weight, getting fitter to starting your own company or taking the steps to reaching a promotion. You know that your life is going to benefit greatly and yet you just cant seem to stick at it.

Benefits of self sabotage

  • You stay safe
  • You stay comfortable

Disadvantages of self sabotage

  • Overwhelm
  • Guilt
  • Self critical talk
  • Negative mindset
  • Lack of productivity

3 Steps to nip the self saboteur in the bud.

  1. Notice him/ her when they start to enter through the door of your mind.
Your ego (mind) doesn’t like change so it will create a story to help you stay what is feels to be safe.
You may feel overwhelm – too much to do, not enough time.
You may become lethargic – low energy, can’t stay focussed.
You may procrastinate and get distracted by other things that become more important – the new series on Netflix, gaming, doing all the jobs in the house. Anything but what will take you towards your goal.
  2. Go back to the reasons why you want this goal.Go for a walk or sit listening to music, or silence if you prefer. Connect to the WHY. Record or write down the goal, why you want it, how your life will change for the better once this goal is achieved, why you deserve it. The more you can expand here the better connection you will get and the quicker you get back on track.
  3. .Ask for help. Not always the easiest of things to do is it?
Ask for insights from people you know are behind you, support you. You could post on a social media page you follow or find uplifting? Make sure you only ask people who are like minded so you receive positive, helpful feedback.
